5 Tips For Success With Retinol And Retin-A Use

A great decision.

There is really nothing in the world of skin care that can match the efficacy and ease of use that comes with Vitamin A based products that contain either retinol (OTC) or Retin-A.

This year, I began my own journey using both of these products and I really love the results. In this post, I’ll give you five tips that I personally have found useful and some before and after shots to show you how I’m doing.

5 Tips For Success With Retinol And Retin-A (Tretinoin

Begin using retinol for at least a few months.  Retinol is an ingredient that can be found in many OTC skin care products.  I am using and highly recommend the ROC products that can be found on the shelves of drugstores and supermarkets.  Retinol is more easily tolerated by the skin and will come with milder side effects, which are usually dryness, redness, itching, and peeling.

Don’t go crazy.  Ease into retinol use by staring a couple of times per week or whatever is best for you.  Gradually increase that to every other day and then every day.  The skin does build up a tolerance so as time goes on, you will notice less and less of the side effects I mentioned above.

Add in Retin-A slowly.  Once your skin tolerates retinol nightly without any issues, you can begin to use Retin-A.  Start with one night per week, using your retinol the other 6 nights.  Work up to twice weekly, and go on from there, only as your skin can tolerate it.

Improve your eating habits.   Increase your water consumption by 2 or 3 full glasses per day to help your skin stay hydrated.  Also eat foods high in good fats such as avocado, olive oil, salmon and nuts.

Don’t give up.  As I mentioned before, the skin does build up a tolerance for Vitamin A products.  But that doesn’t mean it happens quickly.  For myself, it took about 2 to 3 months of using Retinol before I could use my Vitamin C serum during the day.  But everyone is different, so use your own judgement when it comes to your skin, and of course consult a dermatologist if you have any serious concerns.

Stay beautiful everyone!
