Thumbs Down To The Ordinary Retinol In Squalane

Despite the hoopla.

I have been reading lots of great things about The Ordinary skin care products.  And so I ordered some.  Namely the 0.5% Retinol in Squalane, which I have been using for weeks.  My results?  Not good, ladies, not good at all.  Let me go on.

Price is the thing.

Yes, this stuff is cheap enough.  But, don’t let that be enough to make you buy it.  Remember, even $5 spent on a product that doesn’t work well is $5 wasted.  If you think of it that way, you may think twice.

It just isn’t there.  I do not have sensitive skin.  My skin is normal and very healthy to begin with.  I’m looking to reduce visible signs of age, along with maintain the good skin I already have. That’s my plan with using retinol.

From the first time I applied The Ordinary Retinol In Squalane, I didn’t feel good about it.  It stung like crazy (compared to another retinol product I’ve used) and, I didn’t see anything good at all in weeks of use.

Furthermore, I’m no stranger to squalane.  It’s in many products, and I’ve used quite a few of them.  My diploma in fitness and nutrition makes me quite comfortable with the origins of squalane – which is derived either from sharks and other large aquatic mammals, or green olives.  As per their website, The Ordinary uses vegetable-derived squalane, which means it’s from olives.  That would never be my choice, as we humans are not as chemically compatible with plants as we are mammals.  In other words, plant squalane is likely to be less effective – possibly totally useless – in skin care products.

I rarely, and I do mean super-rarely, ever give a thumbs down review to any product.  But this is one of the exceptions.  Spend a bit more.  Get a better product.  There’s plenty of them out there.

I purchased The Ordinary Retinol In Squalane myself from an online retailer.

I don’t think I’ll try The Ordinary. I am wary of anything that is so cheap. I’ve had bad experience with the pricey stuff too but if they only charge that much my question is “why?”

I had an awful experience with The Ordinary retinol. Same product you have here. It burned and itched like heck. It even woke me up at night. After a week of hell I tossed it in the garbage.

I tried The Ordinary moisturizer after my sister said she loved it. It’s the one with the hyaluronic acid in it. It was awful. Stung every time I applied it so it ended up in the trash. Like you say – it was $5 wasted!
