Here are six home spa essential oils, that are no doubt also to be found in many professional spa treatments as well.

Note – The botanical name is in brackets so that you can be sure to purchase the correct essential oil. Some, such as lavender, are produced from different plant species, so be sure to read labels carefully.

1  Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Uses – Balances natural skin oils for all skin types. It’s hydrating and soothing even for sensitive or very dry skin and also helps even out combination skin.

2  Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)

Oil obtained from – fruit peel

Safety check – avoid strong UV light on the skin for 12 hours after massage application

3  Juniper (Juniperus communis)

Safety check – not to be used during pregnancy

Uses – It’s a powerfully detoxifying oil for cellulite and fluid retention. It improves circulation, and helps muscular aches. It’s a good cleanser for oily skin.

4  Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Oil obtained from – flowers and leaves

Safety check – no issues; can be used full strength by putting a few drops on a cotton ball to treat breakouts

Uses – Soothing and rejuvenating to all skin types. It’s commonly used in cleansers and creams and and its calming aroma benefits muscular tension and headaches.

5  Lemon (Citrus limonum)

Oil obtained from – fruit peel

Safety check – avoid strong UV light on the skin for 12 hours after massage application

Uses – It’s a natural antiseptic and cleansing oil, which helps dry oily areas of the skin that are prone to blemishes and blackheads. It also tones the skin, shrinks enlarged pores and improves skin texture.

6  Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Oil obtained from – flowers

Safety check – no issues

Uses – Excellent for oily skin and hair. It balances skin tone and is an excellent treatment for oily, congested complexions.
